Off to HMQS we go!
This year we decided to participate in the 2009 Quilt Challenge. Here's how it works. We purchased a kit that included 6 prints from the collection Elle Fun by Quilting Treasures. The challenge is to make a quilt with a perimeter of no more than 120", using the theme Pump Up the Color. You may add embellishments and up to four other prints. We came up with the idea.
"On a Bike" The only fabric that we added was the white background material. We appliqued the wool bike and then added a few embellishments. This quilt will be judged at the quilt show May 7-9 2009 then auctioned off. The money that is raised will be used to build a well in Kenya. Piecing by Kathleen Whiting, Natalia Bonner & Whitnee North. Machine Quilting by Natalia Bonner.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to take a break from our normal routine and stop to smell the flowers. We spent the day at Thanksgiving Point Gardens in Lehi, UT.
If you are ever in Utah I would highly recommend taking the time to go there.
Maybe if you cannot go there you can just view our pictures and enjoy the beauty as much as we did!

Yesterday we worked on creating the free pattern of the month for May. We will feature a small portion of it tomorrow night when we teach a class at a retreat.May Flowers
by: Piece N Quilt
This project was so fun to create because it is all made from Jelly Roll strips. The flower is made using Marble Jelly Roll by Moda. The white background was made using solid white Jelly Roll strips by Moda.
So get ready everyone who receives the free pattern of the month. This is just a portion of what the pattern for May will look like.

Sandy Gervais is one of our favorite Moda fabric designers. Shown here are some of her Jelly Rolls from the collections Zippity Doo Dah and Objects of Desire. We love learning about our favorite designers and thought you might too!

Sandy Gervais ~ Sandy has always had an interest in art and sewing. Her mother taught her how to sew at a young age. In high school she made her own clothes and made greeting cards for her friends. Later on she made cards for her boyfriend, who later became her husband. On the advice of her high school counselor she did not pursue a career in art. She was told that an A in high school art does not make you an artist. In 1988 Sandy set out to prove that counselor wrong (or right) and started a greeting card company, " My Dream Designs." In 1992 she combined her love of art and sewing skills and the pattern company "Pieces From My Heart" was born. In spring of 1994, she attended her first international Quilt Market in St. Louis, where she was discovered by Moda fabrics. Many fabric lines later, she is thrilled to be designing fabric for Moda. Designing fabric allows Sandy to work with different color pallets, which is her favorite part of designing. Sandy resides in Algona, Iowa with her husband Bruce and two children, Anthony and Abby. Pieces From My Heart Books and Patterns are available through United Notions/Moda Fabrics
