Favorite Part in the Quilt Making Process

Yesterday Marty asked me on Facebook, "What is your favorite part of making a quilt? Choosing fabric, cutting, sewing, applique, borders, machine quilting or binding?
This is a great question, it really made me take a step back and think about it. My response to her was, "Oh, really I don't know if I can choose! I love it all! I probably don't enjoy putting on borders the most but other than that I love it all!"

Later in the day I spent some time doing a little bit of applique by machine, which I really enjoy, it's my time to think, and I really started to think about her question. I thought about how borders are my one of my least favorites. Then I also thought about the fact that I've never actually bound one of my quilts. Kathleen has an industrial machine and she (lucky for me) attaches all of my bindings.

So here is my question to you, I think it'd be really fun to hear, what is your favorite part of making a quilt? Choosing fabric,
cutting,
sewing,
applique,
borders,
machine quilting
or binding?

Also, which of those is your least favorite?

  1. My favorite part is cutting out! I love to cut out the patterns, in fact I have several quilting friends that bring their fabric and patterns to me to cut out, and bring me cookies and stuff, for the favor. I dont have a least favorite, that I can think of. Maybe being in a spot where I cant start something new. I am a great starter, and have 25+ UFOs to prove it!

  2. My favorite part is picking out fabric a.k.a. shopping. ;-)
My least favorite is machine quilting and a close second is putting on the binding. Although I'm getting a little better at those as I gain more experience.

  3. My favorite is piecing the tops. I love to see the little shapes and colors transform into the beauty and how it all works together.
My least favorite part by far is cutting boarders. I have been known to just leave them off because they stress me... what if I cut too short, what if its too long, will my quilt be square... see, it's agonizing!

  4. My favorite part is piecing everything together, when you can finally start to see your project take shape. My least favorite part has always been cutting the fabric. I always go wrong somewhere.

  5. I think my favorite part is machine quilting! It takes me forever to decide what quilting I want for each quilt, but once I start on it, I just get so involved in the process and just love seeing all the designs finished! It truly completes the quilt for me.

  6. Picking out the fabric and then looking at it over and over and over. :) I also like piecing the blocks and then laying them out and arranging them.

My least favorite is sashing. It's so boring, even if it looks pretty when I'm done. And binding -- I want the quilt to be done, and it's so tedious!

I did my first applique last week; I think it might be one of my new favorites.

  7. I'm not really a fan of cutting. Seems so time consuming.

    I love piecing and creating.

  8. Definitely picking a fabric, but then I've only begun quilting less than a week ago, lol!
What I hate most up to now is cutting because I'm just not very good at it!

  9. My favorite parts is cutting and machine quilting, then my least favorite is binding! I know I should hand stitch it but I get lazy and do it on the machine. :D

  10. My favorite part is the choosing fabric. LOVE fabric shopping :D My least favorite is machine quilting b/c I have a really cheap, craptastic machine that makes machine quilting a chore, if I could afford long arm I'd do that.

  11. I like picking out the fabric and adding the border(s). I think that the borders are great because all of the sudden your quilt gets larger with just a little work! The actual quilting is my least favorite part, but that may be due to my machine!

  12. For me it's a tie between the choosing of fabrics and the binding. The first is full of new beginnings, excitement, anticipation, and the second is the final stretch before the quilt is finished. Some of the middle (basting--bleh!) parts are not so much fun to me, but I enjoy the rest enough to make it all worthwhile!

  13. My favorite by far is shopping for fabric :) I also really like sewing the pieces together and seeing it all come altogether. My least favorite part right now is the binding - I just can't my mitered corners to look very good.

  14. I have 2 favourite bits. I like the initial thinking about the apttern and what fabric I will use or vice verda, already have the fabric and then trying ti pick a pattern. I also like piecing the top together. I probably like these the most as this is generally when motivation is at its highest. My least favouite is basting in readiness for quilting. This is primarily because I don't have anywhere to baste. But lucky for me I have a great local long armer nearby who does a fantastic job.

  15. i personally love choosing the fabrics and the binding. it is so fun to put that last finish on it and see it complete. my least favorite would be tied between basting and quilting.

  16. Piecing and binding. I still do the pin and roll method for quilting so until I get a frame I doubt that would be my favorite part.

  17. My favorite is piecing it together and seeing the quilt come together. My least favorite is def. the binding. I can't make it look the way I want to. Another least fav is not having endless funds to buy what ever fabric I want at the time. My hubby is okay with that!

  18. My favorite part is designing...bringing new ideas to fruition.

My least is binding. It makes my hand cramp up.

  19. I like the planning stages best - trying out different fabrics in my mind, or having the fabrics already and thinking about what pattern might suit them best. I guess the tail end of piecing before the rows come together is hardest for me; I don't like the production feel of it. Once the rows start to come together it gets exciting again!

  20. I love hand binding the most. I love to cuddle up on the couch with a my husband and a Coke, watch a movie and stitch.

I agree with the borders, it take a long time, but I love to unfirl (sp?) the completed quilt after the borders are attached.

  21. Love it all from the shopping to the binding...it is such fun!!

  22. I definitely hate binding...but what I like the most - depends on what kind of quilting I'm doing! I will say that choosing the fabric is sometimes very stressful for me because I either have too many options or I have a particular hue in mind and I'm having a hard time dyeing it.

  23. My favorite parts are piecing or hand applique (I won't do it by machine), and hand quilting.

Least favorite part is, by far, basting. I will pay someone else to do that part so that I don't have a bazillion unfinished tops laying around waiting to be quilted.

Not terribly crazy about the cutting either. I wish I had the patience to cut it all then piece it all, but since I hate cutting and love piecing I do only so much as I go along.

  24. My favorite part is hand-sewing the binding down...I get so excited that a project is actually almost finished. I find it to be very relaxing. I think my least favorite part is cutting...I never seem to get those patches "just right" but have become pretty good at fudging...so it works for me, I guess.

  25. I love sewing all the pieces together and then quilting it. I really do not like to baste(pin) the quilt though.

  26. what's not to love about shopping for fabrics... but what I actually love most about quilt making is the actual piecing of the blocks... and seeing it all come together.

Getting down on my knees to pin on the borders doesn't thrill me either - but gosh quilts that have them sure do look much nicer than the ones that don't. ;)

What I like LEAST is trimming up the quilt and attaching the binding so if you have someone doing this for you - consider yourself VERY LUCKY!!! ;)

  28. This is an interesting question and I bet there's 100 different answers...

I love choosing fabrics and putting colours together and finishing!!!
    My least favourite is pinning.

  29. My favorite is piecing. And my least favorite is handstitching the binding. I think this is because I'm a lefty and it never feels like it flows right.

  30. My favorite is laying all the PIECES out onto the floor and arranging them into what the final will look like... its the first glimpse at what you have created.

  31. Choosing fabric, and sewing are my favorites, the last three the least, though basting would be in there too...I guess once I'm done the flimsy I'd be ok with someone else finishing it.

  32. I love the dreaming about it :)
I really enjoy finishing up binding and admiring how great it looks as I work on the hand sewing. I love making blocks too.

  33. I like it all!! Except maybe the ironing. That always seems to slow me down.
