Fancy Forest Quilt - Custom Machine Quilting by Natalia Bonner

Joan made this beautiful Fancy Forest quilt and sent it to me for some custom machine quilting

I knew that I wanted to enhance the modern feel of the quilt, but add in a bit of traditional quilting as well. So, I decided to play with the background filler, I quilted Pebbles, Clams & Swirls, I teach how-to quilt all of those patterns in my book; Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting

On all of the rabbits I machine quilted feathers in their ears, stitched in the ditch around the eyes and noses and then machine quilted straight lines on the face, keeping it fresh and modern.
On all of the owls I used my favorite curved ruler and quilted curves on the owl wings, clam-shells on the belly and then a few circles on the eyes.
If you look closely you can see that I stitched in the ditch around all of the blocks, then I also  machine quilted an outline about 1/2" on the outside of blocks. I like to do this, I think that it helps to really separate the blocks from the background.

I snapped this picture while I was quilting the quilt and shared it on instagram. I really do love to quilt feathers and they turned out perfect on the butterflies.

Pattern for this quilt is Fancy Forest by Elizabeth Hartman.

Thanks for letting me machine quilt this beautiful quilt Joan!

  4. I could learn to quilt like you if I had fifty more years of life and I spent six hours a day practicing. This quilt is such a beauty! If you quilted such a wonder for me, I don't think I could let anyone use it until I had a houseful of them. You are a true master!
