How to: Mosaic Star Quilt Block- 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks

Are you ready for star quilt block tutorial #29? Today's fun star quilt block is the Mosaic Star. I love this block, the quilts that can be made from it are so super cool, make sure to scroll down to the bottom to check them out! 



Cutting:
This block will finish at 12"x12" square.

White fabric:
8- 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strips
12- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares

Teal fabric:
4- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares
8- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.
4- 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strips.
1- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" square

Sewing:
Sew one 2 1/2"x2 1/2" teal and one 2 1/2"x2 1/2" white square together.
Press toward the darker fabric.

Repeat, make four of these units.

Sew one 2 1/2"x4 1/2" white strip to the left side of the teal and white unit.
Press.

Repeat, make four of these units.

Place one teal 2 1/2" square on the lower left corner of one white 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Place one teal 2 1/2" square on the lower right corner of one white 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.

Repeat, make a total of four of these flying geese units.

Place one white 2 1/2" square on the lower left corner of one teal 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Place one white 2 1/2" square on the lower right corner of one teal 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.

Repeat, make a total of four of these flying geese units.

Sew the two flying geese units together.
Press the center seam open.

Repeat, make a total of four of these units.

Sew one corner unit, one flying geese unit and one corner unit together.
Press.

Repeat, make two of these units.

Sew one flying geese unit, one 4 1/2" teal square and one flying geese unit together.
Press.

Sew the three rows together.
Press.

Now, to make this into a 96"x96" square you'll need the following fabrics:

White fabric:
6 3/8 yards

Teal fabric:
5 1/4 yards

The quilt above is the quilt that can be made from just one block repeating, I think it's pretty cool. In the version below I swapped the fabric placement on every other block. It's so cool to see how different that makes the two quilts.
