Machine Quilting An Applique Quilt by Natalia Bonner

Over the summer I custom machine quilted this beautiful applique quilt that was made by Martha. Over the last few years I've machine quilted a few of these beautiful quilts and each time I've quilted one I've been so amazed by all of the gorgeous hand applique. Truly a work of art.

Because the applique is really the focal on this quilt I chose to make my machine quilting secondary, I really wanted Martha's applique and hand work to pop and my machine quilting to become the secondary design.

I chose to quilt a combination of pebbles, swirls, clams and occasionally a feather in the background. I really love how this quilt turned out. (I teach, step-by-step how to quilt each of these motifs in my book; Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting.)
In each of the four corners I also quilted a fun little feather swag. I really love machine quilting feathers and I love the little bit of extra detail that they added to the border.

Thanks for letting me machine quilt these beautiful quilts Martha!

I used Quilters Dream Batting and SoFine! thread by Superior Threads.
