Introducing: Pendant

With our new fabric line, Thrive hitting stores within the next month it seems like perfect time to introduce you to another new pattern that features our Thrive fabric.

Introducing: Splice

I am so excited today to officially introduce you to our newest quilt pattern; Splice! I'm in love with this quilt! If you know Kathleen and I you know that we LOVE log-cabin style quilt blocks. We love them so much that we wrote a whole book based around them; Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts, so why not design a quilt that coordinates with our new fabric line, Thrive, that is log-cabin style.

Incline Quilt - Custom Machine Quilting by Natalia Bonner

Last summer I traveled to Las Vegas and taught a few machine quilting and piecing classes at Quiltique. The students in my classes were fabulous and I had such a great time teaching there. One of my students, Jeanne, finished her Incline quilt and then brought it to me for some custom machine quilting. Jeanne loved how I had custom machine quilted the original version and asked me to quilt her quilt like mine.

Spider Star Quilt Pattern - The Battle Against Breast Cancer

After several requests for this fun Spider Star quilt block to be converted into a 72" quilt I finally have the math all figured out and the instructions written.

When I decided to convert this block into a 72" square I chose to write the instructions using half square triangles instead of flying geese. The blocks are big, and in my opinion when blocks get too big it becomes hard to keep things square. So, working with half square triangles will create no waste and be a bit easier to manage.

I've sketched out this pattern in simple two color palates, but I'd love to see it made more scrappy. I think it could be so cheery.

Navajo Star Quilt Pattern - The Battle Against Breast Cancer

Hello my amazing, supportive quilting friends. I can't even write these blog posts without coming to tears. This community has been absolutely amazing in supporting my mom, Kathleen Whiting, in her fight against Breast Cancer. I hope that you will all know just how much every single one of you are truly appreciated.

Today I've got another fun quilt/block pattern, this pattern is the Navajo Star. I designed this pattern to use every bit of fabric, no waste. So the blocks are easy, big half square triangles and the quilt goes together really quickly!

The image above I used Prairie by Cory Yoder, I'm really crushing on that fabric line right now. The image below is decided to make a reverse version. I really love it too.

Ohana - Ohana Means Family - The Battle Against Breast Cancer

Why Ohana? Ohana means family in the Hawaiian culture. No, I'm not from Hawaii, and I have only been to visit a couple of times, however my family has some pretty strong Hawaiian ties. When my mom was growing up her grandparents moved from Idaho to Hawaii to help build BYU Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center, this was supposed to be for just a couple of years, but they fell in love with Hawaii, the people and the culture, so much that they stayed there for over 20 years. So, my mom's childhood was filled with trips to Hawaii to visit their grandparents and later her sister and other family. 

Last fall, one of my cousins came up with the idea that for our grandma's birthday we should have a family quilt block exchange. She thought it would be fun to make big, 20" quilt blocks, 2 different patterns in a particular fabric line, each make a bunch of blocks and then swap them for grandma's birthday! My mom came to me with the idea and asked me if I would design a pattern that could be our family block exchange. So, I created this fun, Ohana Quilt. We decided to use Prairie fabric by Cory Yoder for Moda Fabrics.

Each of us made at least 9 blocks, some of us are still working on finishing them, but when we get them all complete, we'll all sew our tops together. 

I'm still working on my quilt, but I can't wait to share it when it's all complete.

I've been keeping this design to just our family ever since I designed it. I absolutely love the pattern, but because I had created it just for our family exchange I knew that it needed a special purpose.

After coming up with the idea for the Battle Against Cancer blocks, I knew this quilt was the perfect quilt to go along with that series. What better way for all of my family to help my mom fight!

The quilt blocks are all 20", so with the sashing the quilt finishes at about 69" square, if you wanted it bigger you could easily make more blocks, or add a border. 

The Ohana PDF pattern is available for purchase for $10.00 and I will be donating 100% of the proceeds to my mom, Kathleen Whiting to help her with this fight against Breast Cancer.

American Stars - Custom Machine Quilting by Natalia Bonner

Ilene made this beautiful version of American Stars. The pattern for this quilt is from our book, Modern One-Block Quilts. 

When Ilene sent me this quilt I immediately knew that it could have some cool custom machine quilting.

Northbound - A Low-Volume Quilt Tutorial

My local modern quilt guild, Red Rock Modern Quilt Guild, recently issued a Low-Volume quilt challenge. I was pretty excited about this challenge and couldn't wait to get started. Even though I'm not much of a "stasher" I do have a few fabrics that are left over from quilts I've made that I've just been dying to use. You all know that I love brights, so I knew that the combination of brights and the low-volume fabrics would be the perfect combination for my quilt.

I had the idea in mind to make flying geese, but I wasn't quite sure what the layout would be. I just wanted to go with what I had. I did pick up a few low-volume prints from my local quilt shop, Quilted Works, but other than that, the fabrics are all leftovers.

Metropolis - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

Metropolis is a fun way to show off your favorite solid-color fabrics. This also could be a beautiful Americana quilt in more traditional reds, whites and blues.

Metropolis is another fun pattern from our book; Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts. I really love the crisp white and gray fabrics, they create a really modern feel, but when the blocks are put together with the red corners a red star is created and I love the traditional feel that gives the quilt.

Floating Cabins - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

Grab a few of your favorite solid colors, cut your strips and begin sewing! This quilt is made from large pieces, so it sews together quickly. The block arrangement in this quilt creates a secondary block with a framed-square look. This would be an easy, yet interesting quilt for a beginner.

Nonchalant - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

Nonchalant is an easy one-block quilt made in just tow colors plus white. Make blocks in two color-ways that are almost negative images of each other to create a lively addition to any room. Choose tow of your favorite fabrics and a nice neutral background color, and you'll be ready!

Dazzle - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

Pull your favorite scraps or an interesting fat quarter bundle to make this fabulous quilt. Fabric choice is key; be sure there is a lot of contrast between the dark and light fabrics to really make the pattern pop!

Stacked Up - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

I've been having so much fun introducing you to the quilts in our book; Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts. I get so excited and can't wait each week to share another. Luckily there are 20 quilts in the book so I can keep sharing for quite a while!

This fun quilt is Stacked Up. Stacked Up is a cool variation of a Log Cabin quilt block. Fabric placement is key in this quilt, giving the quilt the look of blocks stacked on each other.

Framed Cabins - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

Grab a few of your favorite solid colors, cut your strips, and begin sewing. This quilt sews together quickly! With its large solid-color pieces, this would be a fun quilt to show off your machine quilting, but it would be equally interesting if you featured your favorite big-scale prints in the large open areas.

Peaches & Cream - Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts

Hope you're all having a great summer so far! This quilt, Peaches and Cream totally reminds me of summer time and makes me want to go eat peaches! YUM!

A large repeating block appears when you set four block together in this graphic quilt. The warm coral and gold fabrics draw the eye, while the soft blues add a restful frame in the background. White strips create a strong all over grid and modern vibe.

This quilt is Downtown Cabins and it's one of our new patterns from our new book; Cabin Fever: 20 Modern Log Cabin Quilts. I LOVE so many of the quilts from our new book, but I really do love how bright and cheery this quilt is. It just makes me smile.

YAY!!!!
