Fractal - A Mini Table Topper

I am pretty sure I'm a pretty simple sewist. I like to keep things simple, ya know, straight seams, half square triangles, things that I think are more simple. Y seams, and partial seams have always scared me to death, maybe because I haven't really ever sewn them.

Kimberly and the girls over at Fat Quarter Shop have teamed up with Art Gallery Fabrics, creating AGF Stitched with Kimberly, and come up with an adorable new pattern, Fractal. The cutting is done using the Creative Grids Kites Plus Ruler, and it's actually way easier than I would have ever imagined.

When the girls over at Fat Quarter Shop asked me if I'd like to sew along and make the Fractal Quilt with them I was really excited to try it out and try something that is really out of my comfort zone.
My first thought was scrappy. The original quilt is more scrappy looking I thought it would be fun to make my quilt scrappy. After I got the fabrics I just couldn't break away from what I love, simple, clean, two or three color quilts. It's just who I am.

Then when it came time to star sewing I decided to play around a little bit with the pattern. The Kites Plus ruler has several size options so I decided it would be fun to use the little 4" size kites and turn my quilt into a table runner for my nightstand. I'm so glad I did, It think it's adorable and it fits perfectly on my nightstand.

I mixed Art Gallery solids with some of the Art Gallery Prisma Elements. Then I machine quilted my table runner with small straight lines, they are about 1/4" apart.

Now that you've seen my take on this fun pattern you'll have to hop over to Fat Quarter Shop to check out Kimberly's original pattern.

Kits for the Fractal quilt are available for purchase here.

  2. That is a really cute table topper. Thanks for providing that link. I was debating about buying that ruler because I wasn't sure it would work for what I wanted to make, but now I think I might buy it anyway!

  3. What a great interpretation of the pattern, Natalia! I love the texture that the quilting gives it too.

  4. I just picked up this new credenza/sideboard/dresser thing for my dining room and think that a table runner like this would just be awesome. Loving yours... thinking I will make its twin in different colors. :)
