Custom Machine Quilting - 2 Applique Quilts - By Natalia Bonner of Piece N Quilt

Hi friends! I cannot believe how fast this year is flying by! It's already May. I swear Christmas was just last week.

Obviously I have fallen a little bit behind on my regular blogging, and this makes me terribly sad. I love my blog. I love blogging and sharing the quilts that I've been working on, but to be totally honest the last month has just been crazy. I have been putting in a lot of extra hours quilting and sewing and I just had to let blogging be the one thing that didn't get done. With Quilt Market just a few weeks away things are still going to be a bit crazy, but after that I think, maybe I'll get back to a regular blogging routine. :)

I do have some amazing things to share and I really can't wait to share what I've been up to with you all.

Okay, so back to the quilts I've got to share today! Carol made these two beautiful applique quilts and brought them to me for some custom quilting. The quilts are darling and I knew they were going to be really fun to machine quilt. Carol did ask me to keep the quilting a little bit lighter, she wants to put these two quilts on beds, if you know me well you know that I like heavy quilting, so keeping things a bit lighter is a bit of a fun challenge. :) Carol also asked me to quilt the two quilts similar but not exactly the same.

Here's the first quilt, on this one I used curved rulers and really kept it soft, I love that by using the curved rulers I was able to really bring a fun circular pattern out, I think it plays really well with the applique.

I also had a lot of fun with the scalloped border on this quilt. I hadn't ever seen scallops quilted like this before, large and small ones, and I wasn't quite sure if I'd love the final result, but, I'm obsessed. I love it. I love that by adding in the little scallop it creates the extra bit of interest.

On the second version I chose to keep the scallops around the outside border to more of a traditional scallop and quilt cross-hatching in the sashing between the blocks. I think this one turned out really cute too!

I did quilt the same swirls in the background on both quilts, so they do have that in common, I also outlined around all of the applique and added a little bit of quilting to some of the larger applique pieces. I just couldn't live such big spaces unquilted.

Thanks for letting me machine quilt these beautiful quilts Carol!

  5. Yes...as usual...they are just beautiful! NO ONE does swirls better than you...I think I just need to stand beside you and watch you do these gorgeous little swirls for an hour! lol....I just can't seem to get mine to look right. They just don't nest nicely like yours do. Sigh! Your posts are always a delight. Thank you for sharing.
