Funky Wonderland Quilt Tutoiral

Funky Wonderland Tutorial
approx. quilt size 50"x50"
By: Natalia Bonner of Piece N Quilt

Materials needed for quilt top:
1 Wonderland Jelly Roll
1 Wheat Flour Jelly Roll (20 strips from it.) First, separate fabrics, set aside one brown, one pink, one purple, one red and one blue strip for funky applique flowers.
Sewing, using wheat flour strips and dark strips create 14 - 9 patch blocks with dark as the main color and 14 - 9 patch blocks with light as the main color. Your 9 patches should be 6 1/2" unfinished. 6" finished. Sew all of the remaining light prints and wheat flour strips together in sets of 3's. Cut apart creating 6 1/2" blocks. You will need 36 light blocks. Lay the 6 1/2" light blocks out and piece the light blocks together in a rail design for background. For applique. Use one brown strip for the flower stems. Cut the brown strip in 1/2 creating two 1 1/4"x44" strips. Sew the strips together end to end creating one 1 1/4"x83" strip. Stitch the brown strip together right sides out. Then pres with the seam towards the back, you are creating stems for all 3 flowers. Finished strip should look like this on the front. From one blue strip cut 3 circles for flower centers. I used the lid from my starch can as a template. From three of the pink and purple strips cut your flowers out. Remember that your flower on the left will be the opposite of the flower image. For the flower center just rotate this image 90 degrees to the right. I like to use starch before I've cut out my flower petals then I use a glue stick and glue my flowers to my quilt background. Use one pin to ensure the petal stays in place as I applique. Glue sticks are water soluble, I prefer to use them over fusible because my quilt will be soft after washing. Applique. We used clear thread and a small blanket stitch.
From one red and one brown strip create the first border. Cut the strips in 1/2 creating four 1 1/4"x44" strips. Attach the border strips as shown in the picture above. From one of the funky prints you will cut the strip in 1/2, creating 2 - 1 1/4"x 44"strips. Cut those strips into 8 - 6 1/2"'x1 1/4" strips. Piece your 9 patch blocks together into two strips for the sides. At each end attach one of the 6 1/2"x1 1/4" strips. Then attach to quilt top. For the top and bottom 9 patch borders you will attach one of those 6 1/2"x 1 1/4" strips just before the corner block. Attach top and bottom borders. Use leftover strips for binding. We prefer to trim our strips down to 2 1/4" for binding. Quilt, bind, wash for antique look. ENJOY!! We would love to see your finished Funky Wonderland quilts!
