Piece Quilt Back

Do you piece your quilt backs?
Do you make scrappy quilt backs?

I have to admit. I don't. I don't mind the way they look but I've always used just one fabric for my quilt backs.
However. I recently pieced a quilt for myself and when it came time to quilt it I realized that I didn't have a quilt back that would even remotely coordinate or look nice with the quilt top. But... I did have a bunch of solids in my "little" stash that would go perfectly with the quilt top. So Kathleen and I pieced them together in strips and made them into a quilt back. I actually hated them. I thought that the quilt back was going to look horrible with the darling quilt top. But I was in a hurry and needed to get this quilt done.
When I finished machine quilting this one and  took it of the long arm machine the first thing I did was turn it over, and much to my surprise I LOVE how this quilt back turned out!

  1. I love the quilting!!! So adorable :) I do pieced backs sometimes. Most of the time when I didn't plan on the quilt in advance so I didn't buy fabric for it :)

  3. I always piece my quilt backs. Sometimes I think the back is just as great as the quilt top.

  4. Very cool! As you know I usually do some piecing on my quilt backs, it's a way to use some stash up too!

  6. I always piece my backs. I love that you can have 2 quilts in 1 with a pieced back. Besides its a great way to use up the extra fabric or those little scraps that needed to find a home.

  9. I almost always piece the back of my quilts. It misht only be a strip using some of the fabrics from the front, but I love doing that. This quilt and the quilting is gorgeous! Great job!

  10. I almost always piece my backings, particularly when I'm working from stash. Even those projects that are worked from a special purchase tend to have a backing that's comprised of pieces of fabric from the front.

  11. I rarely piece my backs. I usually pick a print that I just adore and putting it on the back in all of its glory is what tickles my fancy. Plus, I don't have a huge stash so have the need to use up stash fabic. I love the stripes on yours and I'm allergic to solids so it's a HUGE compliment!

  12. If I'm in a rush, then it's one fabric for the back...but mostly I LOVE to piece my back...sometimes I spend more time on the back than the front! LOL Just love the 'surprize' a pieced backing can provide.

  13. I gotta be honest. I don't like taking the time to piece a back after I have already spent so much time on the front... and my pieced backs usually look really scrappy, rather than artsy. So, if I don't have time or money to run to the fabric store and buy fabric for a back, I usually resort to piecing it. I love it when people piece their backs and they actually turn out, though!
