How to: A Dandy Quilt Block - 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks

All right friends, today's fun, simple quilt block tutorial is:
A Dandy!
....no really, that's the block name A Dandy.
This block is pretty simple, it'll go together quickly, and it creates a fun quilt pattern when put together in a quilt.
Cutting:
(this block will finish at 12"x12" square)
Dark pink - 2 - 4 7/8"x4 7/8" squares
(draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these)
Light pink - 8 - 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares
(draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these)
White fabric - 5 - 4 1/2"x4 1/2" square
2 - 4 7/8"x4 7/8" squares

Sewing:
Place one pink and one white 4 7/8" square right sides together.
Stitch 1/4" from the draw line on both sides.
Cut on the draw line.
Press toward the dark.
Repeat, you need a total of four half square triangle units.

Place one light pink 2 1/2" square on the upper right corner of one of the white 4 1/2" squares, right sides together.
Stitch along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the pink.
Repeat that process with a second pink 2 1/2" square on the top left corner of the block.
Press toward the pink.
Repeat, make four of these units.
Sew one pink and white half square triangle unit, one flying geese unit and one pink and white half square unit together, just like the illustration above.
Press toward the half square triangle units.
Make two of these units.
Sew one flying geese unit, one white square and one flying geese unit together.
Press toward the white center block.
Sew the three units together.
Press.

The key to getting the correct look in this block is using the lighter value print for the smaller triangles.

Now, to make it into a 96"x96" quilt top you'll need the following fabrics:
Dark Pink fabric - 3 yards
Light pink fabric - 1 5/8 yards
White fabric - 7 5/8 yards
Here's the color variation option. I sketched this one using light and dark gray in every other block. It's kinda cool to see the diamond shapes that come to life in this quilt.

Hope you all enjoy! I'll be back tomorrow with another quilt block, click here to see all of the blocks so far.
