How to: Picket Fence Quilt Block - 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks

This 30 days of Sewing Quilt Blocks is going to go by so fast, we're already to the fourth block!
If you're just joining in you can find all of the quilt blocks here.

Also, I've had a few questions, so I'll try to answer them here, all 30 blocks will finish at 12" square, and although I'm just giving you layouts for quilts using one repeating block, these blocks could go together and make an adorable sampler quilt.

Today's quilt block is:
Picket Fence

Cutting:
(this block will finish at 12" square)
White fabric - 2 - 3 1/2"x6 1/2" strips
2 - 3 1/2"x3 1/2" squares
1 - 6 7/8"x6 7/8" square
Green fabric - 1 - 6 7/8"x6 7/8" square
1 - 3 7/8"x3 7/8" square
Blue fabric - 1 - 6 7/8"x6 7/8" square
1 - 3 7/8"x3 7/8" square

Sewing:
Blue and green half square triangle blocks
Place one blue and one green 3 7/8"x3 7/8" square right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.
Stitch a line, 1/4" from the draw line on both sides of the draw line.
Cut in half on the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
You will now have two, 3 1/2"x3 1/2" half square triangle blocks.
Now sew one 3 1/2"x3 1/2" white square to the bottom of one of the half square triangle blocks.
Press toward the white.
Repeat, making two of these units.
Sew one 3 1/2"x6 1/2" white strip to the right side of the two units from the previous step.
Press toward the white.
Place one white and one green 6 7/8"x6 7/8" square right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the fabric from corner to corner.
Sew 1/4" on both sides of the line.
Cut on the line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
(you will have a spare half square triangle white and green block.)

Repeat the steps above with one white and one blue 6 7/8"x6 7/8" squares.
(you will have a spare half square triangle white and blue block.)
Sew the block together like a 4-patch.
Press toward the half large half square triangle blocks.
To make the quilt 96" square you will need to make 64, 12" blocks.
(Fabric shown here is Quattro by Studio M for Moda Fabrics.)
Fabric needed:
White - 6 3/8 yards
Blue - 2 1/8 yards
Green - 2 1/8 yards
And, you know me, I like to play around with layout, so this layout above, I've rotated every other block, it's cool to see the star that just rotating half of the blocks you are able to create.
And this is the colorful version. :)

Hope you all enjoy! I'll be back tomorrow with another quilt block, click here to see all of the blocks so far.
