Valentines Pillows ~ 3 Free tutorials!

Today I get to share with you my new Valentines Day pillows!
I'm joining in the Simply Charmed Blog Hop!

I'm joining a fabulous group of ladies who are all making fun Valentines Day tutorials made with one Always & Forever Charm Pack by Deb Strain for Moda Fabrics.
Thanks to Fat Quarter Shop for providing the Charm Pack!

Sweet Pillow
Materials needed:
6 Always and Forever Charm Squares
1/4 Yard coordinating pink fabric
1/2 Yard Solid White fabric
1/2 Yard light colored burlap
Batting to create pillow form
12" Zipper

Begin by appliqueing the word Sweet and a heart onto a 9"x17" rectangle of white fabric.
For letters use a word program on your computer, type out the letters and then enlarge them to 5" tall, now use your favorite applique method to applique letters. We chose to use our starch applique technique.

Next add a 1 1/4" pink border to all four sides.

Now cut your burlap into 4 1/2" strips, sew the burlap to all four sides of the Sweet.

When working with burlap to keep the burlap strait pull out one stran, then cut along where you pulled out the stran. This will help keep it square.

Now cut a piece of your plain white fabric the same size of your pillow, sew that piece to the back of your pillow top. This will act as a stabilizer for the pillow front.

Now you will add your pillow back, we like to have a zipper in our pillows, click here for our How to add a  zipper tutorial.
Now you will attach the pillow back to the front, lay the front of the pillow and the back together, wrong sides together, top stitch around all four sides. For the nice finish you will now add a binding using the coordinating pink fabric.
Since your pillow is an unusual size you will need to make your own pillow form, click here for our Pillow Form Tutorial.

  1. Cute pillows! When my son was in elementary school the teachers always had them make valentine's cards for their moms. Remembering how sweet he was giving me those cards always makes me smile.

  11. These pillows are too cute! Thank you for showing us how you did them. :-)

I don't really have a Valentines Day memory and we don't really celebrate the day unless you count every day to be Valentines day. :-D

  12. i got married on feb 18th, so just sitting and having a quiet dinner with my fiancee that valentines day amidst the busy-ness of last-minute-wedding-prep was just perfect....

  15. Love these! My favorite Valentine's memory is the first I shared with my husband. We snuggled on the couch watched movies and ate candy. It was so relaxing and fun just being together without the showiness of some other couples.

  16. Cute pillows. Thanks for the tute!

I am not a V-day girl, so don't have any good memories :) although I DO like the chocolate. lol

  17. My favorite Valentine's Day memory is my first Valentine's Day with my now-husband. He gave me three envelopes and I had to choose just one of them. Inside of each he had the plans for a different weekend get-away, and whichever envelope I pulled was the get-away I got as my gift. It was such a fun way to give a gift, and then we had a great weekend!

  18. Great pillows!!!
My favorite Valentine's memory involves my high school fundraiser selling carnations. An ex-boyfriend gave me a red carnation (red = love), while my current boyfriend only gave me a pink one. I guess the pressure worked, because I have been married to the pink-carnation giver for over 25 years!

  19. So cute! My favorite memory is the year I was dating my husband. We had just started going out, and he refused to call me because he thought it would send the wrong message. It was my last Valentine's Day alone.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I still have every Valentine my son made for me in elementary school. He is now 26. Little boys are so sweet to their Mamas.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, I really loved the Valentine's days as a kid in school when we made little mailboxes and every kid handed out every other kid valentines in their mailboxes. No one was left out and we got candy to boot!

    ReplyDelete
  25. My favorite Valentines memory is the first V-day when I was dating my husband. He came to see me all spiffed up with a stuffed rabbit and candy but all I saw when I opened the door was his profusely bleeding head wound!! He had scraped himself on the shower head and evidently wasn't one for looking in the mirror! He was very crabby I didn't notice his gifts but was trying to doctor his wound...I thought he had been in a car accident! Thanks for the giveaway chance, love the "sweet" pillow!

My favorite Valentines Day memory was my first with my hubby. We were both starving college students, so we celebrated V-day at Wendy's with frosties and french fries. It's still our tradition now - 11 years later! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Love the pillows! While my kids were growing up we did Valentines day all day long. Heart Biscuits for breakfast, Heart shaped sandwiches & heart cookies for lunch and heart shaped pizza or meatloaf for supper with a heart shaped cake for dessert. It was fun and they still talk about it. Have had many 'favorite' V-days with my Sweetie. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  34. How cute the little heart cutouts instead of circles in the letters. Your stitching really adds to the letters pop. Those are cute pillows. Making Valentines with my kids. Using those paper doilies, red construction paper and gluing everything to death. So fun.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Those are adorable. Thanks for the tutorial.

Growing up our mom would give gifts to the males in the family and my day would be responsible for the girls. It was so cute.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Cute pillows. Ah! Valentine's day - 13 years ago I got my first ever Valentine's Day flowers - from my soon-to-be fiance - now my husband of almost 12 years. I still get flowers, several times a year. Makes me smile : )

    ReplyDelete
  37. How sweet are these? I want to make all three!! My favorite Valentine memory centers around my classroom of special needs children. Without my knowing, my classroom aide organized art and cooking activities to make my day special and we partied hearty!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. What adorable pillows!! They would certainly set the mood for hugs and kisses! :-) Love those bright pinks and red!!! Thank you for the zipper tutorial-- for some reason, I have a zipper phobia.. to the point that I would always alter the patterns to use buttons instead when I was sewing dresses for my daughters... Maybe I can overcome that fear with the help of your tutorial! :-)

Speaking of my daughters-- they're all grown up now.. But, when they were little, one of our favorite Valentine traditions was to make a batch of heart-shaped sugar cookies-- and take all afternoon to decorate them. We would glaze them with white or pink icing, then add a pretty border or message (like "I love you") -- adding sprinkles or sugar crystals to make them "just perfect"! Those "baking days" are my favorite Valentine memory... :-)

  49. i'm not big on valentine's day. in fact, i tell my hubby every year NOT to get me anything. so it is was a huge surprise when i walked into work one day to find 3 dozen 2 white roses (again, not even close to my favorite flower) on my desk. i asked who got all the pretty flowers and everyone just looked at me ... that's when i read the card.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Although I will always cherish the handmade valentines from my children and those are probably my favorite Valentines Day memories, I can remember somewhere way way back, when I was a young child in elementary school, we made little mailboxes out of old milk cartons and decorated them, and everyone at school put their mailboxes on their desks. During the day all the children would sneak the valentines into each other's mailboxes. It was sweet, and I still remember it. I wish I could recall what my mailbox looked like. I'm bettin' it was pink!!!

  62. My favorite Valentine's memory happened about 6 years ago. I had to work a 13 hour shift on Valentine's day and I was dead tired when I got home. I opened the door and the whole house was dark and quiet. I figured my boyfriend was out practicing with his band as we normally don't do anything for Valentine's day. I walked into the kitchen to get some dinner and he was standing by the table with candles lit and a very nice steak dinner all hot and waiting for me.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. Darling! My husband once surprised me with a hunt for my valentine presents. He handed me a paper with a poem clue to the next spot where there was a gift and another clue. All the gifts were to remind me of our honeymoon in Hawaii. It was the greatest!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  76. So very cute! I'm enjoying this hop! One of my favorite memories is giving a Valentine party for a few homeschooling families years ago when my children were little. We had so many heart games and activities, and it brings back some special memories of those earlier growing up years.

    ReplyDelete
  77. My favorite memory of Valentine's Day was when my now 23 year old daughter was in nursery school. She came home with a card she made for me saying, "I don't understand what all the fuss is about Valentine's Day, I love you everyday of the year."

    ReplyDelete
  78. This project is so cute. My favorite memories are doing school projects with my little ones. Attending the school parties was also a great time.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I remeber one Valentine's day way back in time when I cooked a super fancy dinner for my boyfriend and later realised I didn't have where to eat it, I had just moved to a new house and had no dishes!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Darling pillow!
My favorite valentine's day was when hubby surprised me with an engagement ring. We were married four months later...and still married after 35 years!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Love the pillows! The only problem I am seeing in all of this is that I don't know if I have enough time to make all the cute stuff! So many tutorials and so little time :)
My favorite memory of Valentines is probably just spending all those years as a room mother, helping each of our kids make memories at school with their classmates. It was fun. Now they are all grown and they will soon start doing the same for their own children.

    ReplyDelete
  82. As always, a super cute tutorial!! I loved, as a little girl, how we would make mailboxes out of shoeboxes to hold our valentines!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. awwwwwwwwww I love the pillows!!

My favorite Valentine's Day memory - two years ago my hubby and I made a french pizza and watched Phantom of the Opera. Kind of an unusual Valentine's Day celebration but we enjoyed it!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I love this project!!!!. I don't really have any cool Valentine's day story, maybe this year!!!!!. Thank you for the chance!.

    ReplyDelete
  85. My favorite valentines memory is the first Valentines Day date I had with my Husband of 31 years. He took me out to supper. He was (and still is) a VERY kind person. Actually tooooo kind. Our waitress was an older lady and they were a little bit busy- we ordered - she brought our food... but nothing to drink. Nothing at ALL. Not even water. She had just plain forgotten. Well, me being my quiet (yeah I used to be quiet) self - I never said anything (outloud) and began to think ... isn't he thirsty? Even a little bit? Isn't he going to EVER say SOMETHING?!!! ... Nope - he didn't. Finally at the end of the meal she realized we'd had nothing to drink.
Well- I learned several lessons that night= other than how kind my Hubby is - I learned that I MUST speak up and say - HEY I AM THIRSTY! Bring me something to drink!
Whew - now 31 years later - I can speak much louder and more clearly. Ha... Young love makes you a little bit CRAZY!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Great tutorial - thanks for sharing. Fav memory is my niece being born on Valentines day!

    ReplyDelete
  87. My favorite Valentine's memory has to be the year my husband proposed. He got off work early and cleaned the house, cooked dinner from scratch, and set the table beautifully. He lit candles and poured sparkling cider (because he knows I don't love champagne) and surprised me with it all. He gave me my card and while I was reading it (and crying because of all the wonderful things he said) he got on one knee so when I looked up from the card he proposed. We've had many wonderful Valentine Days since but how can you beat that memory? =)

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'll have to check out the starch applique method...sure looks nice on these!
I shared a Valentine with a kid that didn't get any in my class. He was so shocked. Back in those 'old' days, we gave cards to friends...now teachers send home lists so every kid gets a valentine. better that way; that boy was so miserable every holiday where kids gave cards to only their friends.

    ReplyDelete
  89. So cute - love the pillows. My favorite memory is becoming engaged to the man I have been married to for 43 years.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Gorgeous pillows. I especially love the Hugs and Kisses one.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I remember exchanging valentines in grade school. Everyone would decorate a shoe box or some such, with a slot in the top to put on their desk. The other kids would deliver their cards to your mailbox. It was so exciting! (What can I say, I had a dull childhood.)

    ReplyDelete
  92. These are so cute! Great tutorials! My favorite Valentine's Day memory is getting a proposal. So cliche, but cute never the less.

    ReplyDelete
  93. My favorite memory is all the sweet little valentines my children made for me.

    ReplyDelete
  94. When I was 16 and in love with my 1st love I was sick on Valentine's Day so instead of going on a "date", my boyfriend came to my house with my whole family hanging around and gave me a HUGE red heart full of chocolates and a dozen red roses! I was thrilled to say the least and my husband (of 37 yrs.) doesn't do Valentine's Day. That's why the first one I had sticks in my mind so fresh!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Favorite memory: chocolate waffles with whipped cream and berries for breakfast! christina112358 at gmail dot com

    ReplyDelete
  96. Love these! My favorite memory is decorating shoeboxes at school for our Valentine mail box. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  97. OK - those are SO stinkin' cute! My favorite valentine day memory was actually last year when we made some simple contruction paper hearts and had my six kiddos write down what they each appreciated the most about all the other members of the family. Then I made a garland out of their "love notes" and hung them on their bedroom doors to wake up to on Valentine's morning. It was a hit even w/ the 13yo boy:-)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Pretty please.....name of the font???? Love those O's with the hearts in the middle:-)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  105. As an adult I don't do much for Valentine's day but I loved making Valentine's mailboxes at school as a kid and then walking around putting my cards in all of my friend's boxes.

    ReplyDelete

  109. My favorite Valentine day would be February 14th, 2011 when my niece Madison was born!! She is the best!!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Very cute pillows! My favorite Valentine memories are from helping my kids make their Valentine boxes for school. We always went all out and made them in shapes like a basketball goal or football, the Nike swoosh, a teddy bear. One time we even made one out of gingerbread decorated with icing and candies. Fun!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Fun question! My favorite Valentine's Day memory is from the 4th grade. We made those shoebox-mailbox things and exchanged Valentines in class. What made it special was our teacher, who had a loving, enthusiastic spirit and made sure that everyone felt loved, no one was left out, and friendships were strengthened. She was a very special person; it's as if Valentine's Day was made for Patty Firpo.

My only good Valentine's Day memory are the small gifts my mom used to get us. One year we got anatomically correct chocolate hearts. They were about the size of an adult fist which is the size of a real human heart!

  121. Hi! I love your great pillows! Thanks for the designs and the giveaway!
Sorry, after 35 yrs of marriage, no Valentine's memories. Hubby doesn't do Valentine's Day.
I do remember, one winter we added onto our house. Thru Christmas, our anniversary, January, now Feb, I nagged hubby, resident electrician for lights other than bulbs on wires. So, in time for Feb 14, he installed wall lights and a ceiling fan in the living room!
    Take care, Leslie

  152. Your pillows are so cute, too cute. Great tutorial and thanks for all the helpful links. I've never sewn with burlap, actually never even thought about it. I'm always learning. hehe. We're not big Valentines Day folks but before we were married, my now husband would send me roses. Three roses meant I Love You. So one time when I received six roses I asked if that meant I Love You, I Love You? Yes. I was stumped though when one time I received five roses. The flower shop shorted us one rose but that was ok. My husband quickly said it was for I Love You Very Much.

  178. Love the pillows. My favorite memory is setting a trap, so I would know if my nosy mother had read the Valentine's Day card my boyfriend had given me. This incident occurred way back when I was a teen. My mom sewed all the time, so I just picked up a tiny thread and placed it atop the card, which I'd left on my dresser. That way, I'd know that the card had been disturbed if the thread was missing. Sure enough, the thread was missing when I came home from school. I asked my mom if she liked my card. She said, "You left a piece of thread on top of it, didn't you?" Couldn't fool my mom!
