How to: Thirteen Squares Quilt Block - 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks

Thank you to all that sent kind messages and are just as excited as I about these quilt blocks. I love creating and sharing and seeing your blocks just makes my heart sing!

Today's block is:
 Thirteen Squares
Cutting:
(this block will finish at 12" square)
Blue fabric - 8 - 3 1/2"x3 1/2" squares
Red fabric - 12 - 2"x2" squares
White fabric - 28 - 2"x2" squares
4 - 2"x3 1/2" squares

Sewing:
Corner Blocks
Sew one red 2" square and one white 2" square together.
Press toward the red.
Sew one white 2"x3 1/2" unit to the left side of the corner block.
Press toward the red fabric.
Make four of these units.

Four Patch Blocks
Sew one red and one white 2" square together.
Press toward the red fabric.
Sew eight of these units.
Sew the  two patches together, matching up the center points.
Sew a total of four, four patch units.

Blue Blocks
Place two white 2" squares on opposite corners of one of the blue, 3 1/2" squares.
Sew a diagonal line from corner to corner on the white blocks.
Cut, 1/4" on the outside of the stitching line.
Press the white squares out, toward the white fabric.
Repeat this process on all of the blue squares, making a total of eight blue blocks.

Putting the Block Together:
Sew two corner units and two blue units together, as shown in the illustration above.
Sew two of these units.
Press.
Sew two four patch units and two blue units together, as shown in the illustration above.
Sew two of these units.
Press.
Sew the four block units together in rows.
Press.

If you're loving this quilt block make more, then sew them together and make a quilt top!
To make the quilt 96" square you will need to make 64, 12" blocks.
Fabric needed:
White - 5 7/8 yards
Blue - 5 1/8 yards
Red - 2 3/8 yards

  1. A handful of the blocks you are showing would make a really wonderful scrappy sampler--I think I may have to try it!!

    1. I guess I wasn't really clear about that--What I meant was it would look great to make one of EACH of the different blocks you are featuring each day and make a sampler out of them. Can't wait to see what you have next!
