How to: Road to Tennessee Quilt Block - 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks

Today's quilt block is:
Road to Tennessee

This block could be made more than one way, but since I know that a few of you are strictly making these blocks from your stash and your scraps I decided to write the tutorial for this block using half square triangles, that way you won't have any waste like you would with the stitch and flip method.
Cutting:
(This block will finish at 12"x12" square.)
Pink fabric - 16 - 2"x2" squares
8 - 2 3/8"x2 3/8" squares
Gray fabric - 16 - 2"x2" squares
8 - 2 3/8"x2 3/8" squares
White fabric - 16 - 2 3/8"x2 3/8" squares
(draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all of these)

Sewing:
Place one white and one pink 2 3/8" square, right sides together.
Stitch 1/4" on both sides of the draw line.
Cut on the draw line.
Press towards the darker fabric.
Repeat making 16 pink and white half square triangle units.
Repeat with the remaining gray and white 2 3/8" squares.
Make a total of 16 gray and white half square triangle units.
Sew one gray square, one gray and white half square triangle unit, one pink and white half square triangle unit, one pink square, on gray square, one gray and white half square unit, one pink and white half square triangle unit and one pink square together.
Refer to illustration above for correct placement.
Press.
Make four of these rows, exactly the same.
Sew one gray and white half square triangle, one gray square, one pink square, on pink and white half square unit, one gray and white half square unit, one gray square, one pink square and one pink and white half square triangle together.
Refer to illustration above for correct placement.
Press.
Make four of these rows, exactly the same.
Sew the eight pink, gray and white rows together.
Press.
Refer to illustration above for layout.

Fun block isn't it!

Now, to make it into a quilt!
To make a 96"x96" quilt you'll need to make 64 blocks and sew them together in eight rows of eight blocks.
You'll need the following fabrics;
White - 4 1/4 yards
Pink - 5 1/8 yards
Gray - 5 1/8 yards

For this version I simply rotated every other block, I love the pattern that it creates, so I had to sketch it out in a more masculine color scheme as well.

Hope you all enjoy! I'll be back tomorrow with another quilt block, click here to see all of the blocks so far.

  1. If I want to make this with 3 1/2" squares instead of all the little hsts, what size should the corner squares be?

    2. My suggestion is to make your HST the size you want, cut it and iron open, square it up and make the corner squares that size......
