  2. I've never done a block of the month or anything like that...so I really have NO idea what the cost would be. But as far as mystery quilt alongs, I think everything you design is amazing! so I would totally trust your design opinion. :)

  3. I would likely pay about $50 for a design. I would prefer to try a row rather than a block.

  4. Block of the month-- I seldom do them because they are so expensive! Often the quilt top comes in at way over $250. Seems like there are often additional 'kits'; looked into one BOM that had 4 additional kits of embellishments.

Right now I am doing an applique block of the month, which has included all needed items, such as buttons, beads, ribbon and embroidery floss. I am paying $18 a month, which includes the shipping. (the kit comes in a greeting card size envelope, with 1 or 2 stamps on it) Although it includes postage and all the extra items, I still think it is over priced. I get one 10 X 10 square of fabric, but the rest of the fabric is scrap sized. I know it takes time for a shop to put this together, but I still think it is just too much.

I would never do a mystery quilt when I'm paying to receive a kit each month. I want to know what my money is going to give me. The only do mysteries when I can pull things from the scrap box in case I end up hating the final result.

  5. I think if the fabric is provided for let say about a twin size i would pay 80-100. If I have to go find my own fabric and such I wouldn't pay very much.

  6. If the block of the month is including Shipping and fabric I would say $12 for a twin/throw size quilt. For 12 blocks that would come out to be $144 plus additional fabric is still needed for sashing, borders and backing.

I have stopped doing Block of the Months because of the shipping costs. I am having a hard time with $5 shipping and the postage says $2. At $5 a month that is an additional $60 expense for a quilt, which could pay for the backing.

I do look forward to seeing what you decide.

  7. I have followed you for a while now and I think you would be fair. You always choose nice fabrics, so I would participate, so long as I wasn't paying an exorbitant cost.

  10. I have never done a BOM, or Mystery quilt...usually because of cost. It does sound fun, so I will have to see how much.

To me...if it is broken down monthly to not be too much, I am ok with it. I cannot pay in a lump sum.

  11. I live in Canada and the reason I stopped block of month was the shipping charge and I know you can't do much about that but when shipping charge is the same as the block!!

  12. I would love to participate but the cost would be the big issue. I would only be able to do it if I could pull from my stash, etc.

I've always been intrigued by mystery quilts and not knowing what the final result would be like.

  13. I am not a good one to comment on BOMs, I have three unfinished. One Sue Spargo, that was very creative but really outrageously priced, I think I had about $800. in that quilt. I think it depends on the quilt but $15 to $25 would be fair. I'm not good with mysteries,I have to know what I'm getting into and love it from the start. *You should probably consider automated payments for customers to make sure you get paid, trying to collect money is no fun...

  14. A downloaded pdf pattern (for purchase) might appeal to a few quilters who are sensitive to shipping costs, not that I blame them.

  15. Personally I would prefer a Block Swap. We could make a determined size square, sign our names on them and send to participiants. The fun of not knowing what we would receive would be a mystery. One block should fit in a business sized envelope and perhaps two stamps for postage. Just my thoughts on doing something with anticipation yet not so costly. The bonus is we could use up some of our scraps and stash. If there is a large enough group participating everyone would end up with a quilt when done. Thanks for hearing my idea.

  16. I also do not participate in BOM clubs because of the high cost. I would be willing to pay a BOM cost, including fabric and shipping, of $10-$12. Shoot, I could buy a whole yard of fabric for that price and a BOM doesn't take anywhere near that much fabric. So it seems $10-$12 should cover packing & shipping. I understand, of course, that the backing and binding would be an extra cost.

  17. 12-15 a month for a block which would have to include shipping. But if your talking a row a month humm..3-4 blocks, still don't think I'd want to sign up for more 25-30 a month.

  18. I have participated in a few quilt alongs on blogs and love it. I tend not to do BOM that you have to pay for simply because I live in Australia and once you add postage it is not worth it.

    Love your blog and patterns!!

  19. I agree with the other commenters - I haven't participated in BOM's because of the costs. It seems like the charges are for more than the fabric/pattern and shipping. BUT, I understand the logistics of running a business and making money so I don't disagree with the process. If you could figure out a way to make a little money and make the costs reasonable, I bet you would have a lot of takers. Especially because your work is so darling! But it seems like that hasn't been done yet, so maybe it just isn't possible? If you did a mystery quilt and broke down the fabric requirements so that we weren't purchasing a lot of fabric up front and then you sold a pdf pattern each month or week - maybe that would be the way to go? You probably have something in mind - maybe just throw it out on the blog and see what people think? Have fun with it Natalia! Don't stress about it - if it's fun for you - then I say go for it :)

  20. I've also never joined/participated in a block of the month due to the outrageous costs most of them charge (i.e. $25.00 a month JUST to make ONE block that ony contains about a FQ worth of fabric - if that!?!?). So, if the costs were more evenly matched to the amount of fabric used - while still allowing for a profit for you - then I would probably be more inclined to participate. :) Hope this helps - and yes, I voted on your sidebar questions too.

  21. Hi Natalia, loved reading the comments...my two cents, I am doing a bom at the moment and with added shipping cost ( Canada) this quilt will have cost me over 389.oo and that does not include backing and binding. I guess I did not think of this initially. It is one quilt I possibly would never use, so I think the cost is outrageous. Sew back to your question....mmmm I would love to see a bom or mystery quilt being available as a pdf file, we all have so much scraps, I am sure we could do one up without added fabrics, that would bring the cost down considerably. It is hard to satisfy everyone with colour choices, but if we had a pattern we would all bring sew much more to the whole experience. So toodles, look forward to some kind of decision you will make. blessing ms cost per month....7.50 for just a pattern

  22. I've never done a bom but have considered one website where cost is $18.00 but haven't done so because of the cost and I have other obligations to take care of right now. I can't see why the high price for approx 18x18 square of cloth plus the cost of shipping. That is why I don't order a lot of stuff b/c of the cost of shipping. A .pdf would be ideal for me as I have plenty of extra fabric laying about and if needed go to the quilt store for more to match and finish for a quilt I would love to use or give.

  23. I think you should sell your patterns/kits. I just can't imagine you getting together BOM kits every month with your busy schedule. What does your Mom say???

  24. I'm not a fan of BOM's with fabric included. Half of the fun of making a quilt is looking for the right fabrics and seeing the individual interpretations. Maybe you should just do a pdf pattern price, most people would be more inclined to sign up for that than the expense per month of a whole kit. Look how much work you would be creating for yourself - a pdf pattern is the simple choice!

  25. Why not have a download of the pattern only, with suggestions for fabric? That way there's no shipping for anyone, everyone can use fabric they already own or buy new, their choice, and it's way less work for you. I think a fair price for a download of a pattern for one block would be about $2 or $3.

  26. For fabric and all I would pay no more than about 28 bucks. For just the pattern and I pick out my own fabric maybe 5 bucks a month.

  27. Oh what fun...count me in....I'd throw out say $10 bucks a block!
    Thanks

  28. I've never done either! I would like to but the cost has always been high. If it was not too much and I could pay monthly, I'd do it. Some of the mystery on other sites I'm glad I didn't do it as they were not my style. But with you, I know they'd be MODERN and look great. Looking forward to hearing what you end up doing.
