How to: Shoofly Quilt Block - Basics Quilt Block Tutorials

Today's BASICS quilt block tutorial is the Shoofly Quilt Block.



To make a 6" block you will need to cut the following fabrics:
White fabric
4- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares
2- 2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares
Pink fabric
1- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" square
2- 2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares

To make a 9" block you will need to cut the following fabrics:
White fabric
4- 3 1/2"x3 1/2" squares
2- 4 7/8"x4 7/8" squares
Pink fabric
1- 3 1/2"x3 1/2" square
2- 3 7/8"x3 7/8" squares

To make a 12" block you will need to cut the following fabrics:
White fabric
4- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" squares
2- 4 7/8"x4 7/8" squares
Pink fabric
1- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" square
2- 4 7/8"x4 7/8" squares

Sewing:
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the 2 pink - 7/8" squares. 
(So, if you're making the 6" block this will be on the 2 7/8" square, if you're making the 9" block this will be the 3 7/8" square and if you're making the 12" block this will be the 4 7/8" square.)
Place the pink square, right sides together, with the white square that is the same size.
Sew a straight line 1/4" on both sides of the draw line.
Cut on the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Square up the half square triangle to the 1/2".


Sew one pink and white half square triangle block, one white square and one pink and white half square triangle block together. 
Refer to the illustration above.
Press toward the pink fabric.
Repeat, make two of these units, exactly the same.
Sew one white square, one pink square and one white square together.
Press toward the pink fabric.
Sew the three rows together.
Press.
