How to: Union Star Quilt Block - 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks- Star Version!

Happy Friday! I hope you've all been enjoying these star quilt block tutorials. I've had fun with them, and I have plans to sew one of them up this weekend, I'll be sure to share lots of pictures here. :)

Today's star quilt block tutorial is the Union Star.




Cutting:
This block will finish at 12"x12" square.
White fabric:
1- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" square
6- 2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.
4- 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strips

Gray fabric:
8- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.
4- 2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares

Pink fabric:
4- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares
4- 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strips
2- 2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares

Sewing:
Place one 2 7/8" white and one 2 7/8" gray square right sides together.
Sew 1/4" on both sides of the diagonal draw line.
Cut on the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.

Repeat, make a total of 8, gray and white half square triangle units and 4 pink and white half square triangle units.

Place one white 2 1/2" square on the upper left corner of one pink 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Place one white 2 1/2" square on the upper right of the pink 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal draw line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the stitch line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Repeat, make four of these units.

Repeat the same process to make four white and gray half square triangle units.

Sew one gray and white flying geese unit, one pink and white flying geese unit, one 4 1/2" white square, one pink and white flying geese unit and one white and gray flying geese unit.
Press.

Sew one gray and white half square triangle unit, one pink and white half square triangle unit, one pink and white flying geese unit, one pink and white half square triangle unit and one gray and white half square triangle unit.
Press.
Repeat, make two of these rows exactly the same.

Sew one pink 2 1/2" square, one gray and white half square triangle unit, one white and gray flying geese unit, one gray and white half square triangle unit and one pink 2 1/2" square.
Press.
Repeat, make two of these rows exactly the same.

Sew the 5 rows together, refer to the illustration above for placement.

Now, to make this into a 96"x96" quilt you'll need the following fabrics:

Pink fabric:
3 1/2 yards

Gray fabric:
3 1/2 yards

White fabric:
6 3/8 yards

The quilt above can be made from just one block repeating, the illustration below can be made by switching the colors on every other block. Both are so much fun! :)

  2. Just love these blocks Natalia and think this is my favorite....until you make another and then that will be my favorite. I do like the way they make a great pattern when all put together. Thanks!
