I'm excited to share another fun star quilt block tutorial with you today! Today's cool quilt block is Joyce's Star. I really love this block, and when put together in a quilt I love how the secondary pattern, the gray stars really shows off. I just love it!
Cutting:
This block will finish at 12"x12" square.
White fabric:
8- 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strips
1- 6 3/16"x6 3/16" square
Gray fabric:
12- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of 8 of these.
Navy Blue fabric:
2- 4 7/8"x4 7/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
8- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.
Sewing:
Place one gray 2 1/2" square on the upper left corner of one white 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Place one navy blue 2 1/2" square on the upper right corner of the white 2 1/2" 4 1/2" stirp.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Repeat, make a total of four of these units.
Place one navy blue 2 1/2" square on the upper left corner of one white 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Place one gray 2 1/2" square on the upper right corner of the white 2 1/2" 4 1/2" stirp.
Sew along the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Repeat, make a total of four of these units.
Sew two flying geese units together, as shown in the image above.
Press.
Repeat, make four of these units.
Sew one gray 2 1/2" square to opposite ends of the unit from the previous step.
Press.
Repeat, make two of these units.
Sew one navy blue triangle to the upper left corner of the white 6 3/16" square.
Sew one navy blue triangle to the bottom right corner of the white 6 3/16" square.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Sew one navy blue triangle to the upper right corner of the white 6 3/16" square.
Sew one navy blue triangle to the bottom left corner of the white 6 3/16" square.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Sew one flying geese unit, one square in a square unit and one flying geese unit.
Press.
Sew the two remaining flying geese units to the top and bottom of the block.
Press.
Now, to make this into a 96"x96" quilt block you'll need the following fabrics:
Gray fabric:
2 7/8 yards
Navy blue fabric:
4 1/4 yards
White fabric:
4 1/2 yards
This is the adorable quilt that comes when this block is made multiple times. I love the gray star!!
For the version below I simply swapped the navy blue fabric for an orange fabric.
