How to: Arizona Star Quilt Block - 30 Days of Sewing Quilt Blocks- Star Version!

Hey there! Are you ready for another quilt block tutorial? Well, ready or not I've got another one to share with you, today's quilt block is Arizona Star.


Cutting:
This block will finish at 12"x12" square.

White fabric:
8- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" strips
4- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares
6-2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares

Gray fabric:
1- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" square

Plum fabric:
6- 2 7/8"x2 7/8" squares
(Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.)
8- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares.
(Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.)

Sewing:
Place one plum 2 1/2" square on the left side of one white 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Stitch diagonally along the draw line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the dark fabric.
Repeat this process on the right side of the 2 1/2"x4 1/2" white strip, making one flying geese unit.
Repeat, make a total of four flying geese units.

Sew one white 2 1/4"x4 1/2" strip to the top of the flying geese units.
Press.
Repeat, making four of these units.

Place one 2 7/8"x2 7/8" plum square and one 2 7/8"x2 7/8" white square right sides together.
Sew 1/4" on both sides of the draw line.
Cut on the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Repeat, making a total of 12 half square triangle units.

Sew two half square triangle blocks together, refer to the illustration above for placement.
Press.
Repeat, making a total of four of these units.

Sew one half square triangle block and one white 2 1/2" square together.
Press.
Repeat, making a total of four of these units.

Sew the two units from the previous two steps together.
Press.
Repeat, making a total of four of these units.

Sew one corner unit, one flying geese unit and one corner unit together.
Press.
Repeat, making a total of two of these units.

Sew one flying geese unit, one gray 4 1/2" square and one flying geese unit together.
Press.

Sew the three rows from the previous two steps together.
Press.

That's it! You've made another adorable quilt block!

Now, to make it into a 96"x96" quilt you'll need the following fabrics:

Gray fabric:
1 1/8 yards

White fabric:
7 1/4 yards

Plum fabric:
4 yards

  1. There is an error in the white fabric cutting instructions. It should read "cut 8 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 strips". The correct measurement is used during construction.
