I don't know about everyone else, but I am such a sucker for a crisp red and white quilt. There is just something so awesome about them. So, I thought it would be fun to share a red and white star quilt block. Today's quilt block tutorial is: Cut the Corners Star.
Cutting:
This block will finish at 12"x12" square.
Red fabric:
1- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" square
16- 2 1/2"x2 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of these.
White fabric:
4- 4 1/2"x4 1/2" squares
8- 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strips
Sewing:
Place one red, 2 1/2" square on the left side of a white 2 1/2"x4 1/2" strip.
Sew along the diagonal draw line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Place one 2 1/2" red square on the right side of the white strip.
Sew along the diagonal draw line.
Trim 1/4" on the outside of the draw line.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Repeat, make a total 8 flying geese units.
Sew two flying geese units together, as shown in the illustration above.
Press the center seam open.
Repeat, make 4 of these units.
Sew a flying geese unit, one red 4 1/2" square and a flying geese unit.
Press.
Sew one white 4 1/2" square, one flying geese unit and one 4 1/2" white square.
Press.
Repeat, make two of these units.
Sew the three rows together.
Press.
Now to make this into a 96"x96" quilt you'll need the following fabrics:
Red fabric:
4 1/4 yards
White fabric:
6 7/8 yards

Can you do a layout of several blocks? I really like it when you do that.
